June 6 is a significant day worldwide, especially in Normandy, marking D-Day. As the sun rose, veterans gathered along Normandy’s coast. President Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, and other world leaders joined later to honor World War II veterans, many of whom returned to France for the event. The 80th D-Day celebrations commemorate the freedom and sacrifices of these veterans.
US President Joe Biden addressed the veterans, saying, “On behalf of the American people and as commander in chief, it’s the highest honor to salute you here in Normandy.” He added, “In their generation, in their hour of trial, the Allied forces of D-Day did their duty. Now the question for us is, will we do ours in our hour of trial?”
French President Emmanuel Macron also addressed the veterans, stating, “Here you came to join our efforts with your soldiers and to make France a free nation. And you are back here today—at home, if I may say.” Macron then awarded several veterans France’s highest decoration, the Legion of Honor, to the crowd’s applause.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed his gratitude, saying, “You saved the world. Gentlemen, we salute you.”
Veterans from the US, Canada, and Great Britain traveled to Normandy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the landings at Omaha Beach. These veterans played a crucial role in defeating Hitler and securing an Allied victory in World War II.
Inland from the shore of Omaha Beach lies a cemetery and memorial where many military veterans who lost their lives in the war are buried. Over 150,000 U.S. and Allied troops landed along Normandy, a pivotal moment that shifted the war in favor of the Allies.
