The New York Times reports that after the social media site filed a DMCA request, GitHub removed some of Twitter’s source code that had been recently uploaded online. GitHub has made public the request that alleges that “proprietary source code for Twitter’s platform and internal tools” was compromised.
Microsoft Corp. now owns the famous code hosting site GitHub.
The social media site filed a DMCA takedown notice requesting the code be removed and has requested a judge to order GitHub to disclose who is responsible for the infringement.
Our “algorithm” is overly complex & not fully understood internally. People will discover many silly things , but we’ll patch issues as soon as they’re found!
We’re developing a simplified approach to serve more compelling tweets, but it’s still a work in progress. That’ll also…

The GitHub profile linked to the DMCA takedown displays a single (non-public) code contribution from early January, according to The New York Times, suggesting that the source code may have been available for several months before being taken down. According to the name of the account, “FreeSpeechEnthusiast,” Elon Musk, CEO of Twitter, has previously referred to himself as a “free speech absolutist.”
Elon Musk, the billionaire who purchased Twitter last October for $44 billion and then took the company private, faces new difficulties as a result of the leak. Twitter has descended into disarray as a result of widespread layoffs. Twitter apparently implemented code freezes ahead of layoffs out of concern that departing workers could try to harm the company on their way out.
