As the lawyer for a group of British tabloids prepared to ask the judge to dismiss the lawsuit that the tabloids and several other famous people filed alleging phone tapping and other private intrusions on Monday in London, Prince Harry and Elton John appeared in court.
The Duke of Sussex and six other notable figures have charged Associated Newspapers Ltd.’s (ANL), the owner of The Daily Mail, Mail Online, Mail on Sunday, and Mail.com, of engaging in illegal information gathering.
In addition to singer Elton John and his boyfriend, director David Furnish, the case includes actresses Sadie Frost and Elizabeth Hurley as plaintiffs. The sixth plaintiff is parliament member Doreen Lawrence, whose son was killed in a racist assault.
On Monday, the court heard that Prince Harry had lost friends or “cut them off” because he “was misled by the way the pieces were written into believing that those close to him were the source” of publications about him.
A preliminary High Court hearing in London started on Monday and will last for four days. A court will then rule on whether or not to continue with the case. Aiming for a peaceful resolution, Associated Newspapers (ANL) has begun mediation. An ANL representative stated that the allegations were false and defamatory and were not supported by any proof.
