Third-seeded Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal of Spain to become the only player in the Open Era to win more than one Grand Slam singles title.

Djokovic defeated fourth-seeded Norwegian Ruud, a 24-year-old, in three hours and thirteen minutes, after trailing 5-4 in both the first and third sets. He celebrated by tumbling backwards onto the red clay.
Djokovic, who won the 2008 Australian Open, is now 5-0 all-time against Ruud. He fought off three of four break opportunities and won 80% of points behind his first serve (59 of 74).
