On Sunday, Novak Djokovic beat Casper Ruud in the final of the French Open 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5 to win his record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam championship.

Third-seeded Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal of Spain to become the only player in the Open Era to win more than one Grand Slam singles title.

Djokovic referred to the four Grand Slams in tennis as the “biggest tournaments that we have in the history of our sport.” “At some point in their careers, every player fantasizes of being in this position and hoisting the trophy aloft. To have won 23 Grand Slams in my lifetime is an incredible feat. It’s an amazing sensation, really.

With his third Roland Garros title (2016, 2021), Djokovic also surpassed Nadal as the oldest French Open champion at the age of 36 years and 20 days. Not only did he win all four Grand Slam titles, but he did so a record three times, making him the first man to do so.

Nadal, who is done for the year with hip surgery, gave social media props to Djokovic.

“Many, many congrats on this amazing achievement,” Nadal wrote in a tweet. “Twenty-three is a number that no one could even fathom only a few short years ago, and you did it! Have fun with your loved ones and the group!

Djokovic not only won the match, but he also regained the No. 1 spot in the world from Carlos Alcaraz of Spain.

Djokovic defeated fourth-seeded Norwegian Ruud, a 24-year-old, in three hours and thirteen minutes, after trailing 5-4 in both the first and third sets. He celebrated by tumbling backwards onto the red clay.

Djokovic, who won the 2008 Australian Open, is now 5-0 all-time against Ruud. He fought off three of four break opportunities and won 80% of points behind his first serve (59 of 74).

Djokovic overcame a 4-1 deficit in the first set tiebreak to win. During the two weeks, his opponents were outscored 42-13 in tiebreaks, and he committed zero errors in those situations.

Djokovic had 52 winners against 32 mistakes by Ruud. Ruud, who has yet to win a Grand Slam, finished with 31 winners and 31 mistakes. He faced and defended against 10 break points, saving 7. He lost the Roland Garros final for the second year in a row.
