Senator Dianne Feinstein has died at the age of 90 and the news has been confirmed by her office, on social media. The trail blazing senator from California has a lot of firsts to her credit. The Democrat from San Francisco broke the glass ceiling several times throughout her political life. She was considered a centrist. Suffering from several ailments this year, Feinstein confirmed that she would not run in 2024.
The office of Senator Dianne Feinstein released a statement that confirmed her death. It said that she passed away on September 28, at the age of 90, in her home in Washington D.C. It said that she was one of the few women who could be called “senator, chairman, mayor, wife, mom and grandmother.”
The statement also described the legacy she left behind and said that it was “undeniable and extraordinary” and more.
Tributes have poured in from President Joe Biden, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Senate leader Chuck Schumer, Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, innumerable congresswomen across party lines, of whom many have served with her on bipartisan issues.
Democrat Dianne Feinstein was the oldest member of the Senate. She served from 1992. She was the longest serving woman senator as well as the longer senator who served from California. Earlier in 1978, she became the first woman President of the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco.
Dianne Feinstein became acting mayor in late 1978 after the then mayor George Moscone was assassinated by Dan White, who was a former board member. She served as Mayor for a decade—from 1978 to 1988.
She wrote and championed several bills including the landmark bill—the 1994 assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 under President George W. Bush’s administration. She also sponsored bills to protect California’s desert, helped create an AMBER alert network throughout the nation and more.
California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has the power to appoint a senator who will serve out the rest of Dianne Feinstein’s term. This will ensure a majority of the Democrats in the Senate up to early January 2025. Dianne Feinstein was considered to be a moderate Democrat.
