On Saturday, many inmates broke out of the National Penitentiary in Port-au-Prince. The capital of Haiti has seen significant turmoil due to increased violence, starting on Thursday and intensifying on Saturday, culminating in a prison break following clashes throughout the city. Local media reports that an unspecified amount of prisoners had broken out of prison.
An association of the Haiti Police issued a plea on social media requesting all police officers in the capital to support those battling at the prison. The article urged the officers and military personnel to utilize their vehicles and weapons to combat the detainees.
The statement cautioned that the capital would face severe consequences if the police failed to contain the jail outbreak, with an additional 3,000 bandits entering Port-au-Prince.
Multiple security sources have said that violence escalated on Thursday as gangs targeted police stations, the international airport in the capital as well as the National Penitentiary.
On Friday, Jimmy Cherizier, a former police officer who heads an alliance of gangs, said that they would continue in their efforts to remove the Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Henry is visiting Kenya to mobilize the deployment of troops to guard the island nation. Jimmy Cherizier is nicknamed Barbecue and coordinates gangs under the Vivre Ensemble, translated as Living Together.
Haitian daily Le Nouvelliste said that the assailants had conducted a recon on Thursday using drones. The prison was attacked early Saturday. It holds many known gang leaders as well as those who had assassinated former president Jovenel Moise.
