The US Geological Survey (USGS) said on Wednesday that the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island erupted early on Wednesday morning and that lava flows are now contained to the area’s crater floor. “The opening phases of eruptions are dynamic,” the USGS said in an advisory post. “The activity is confined to Halema?uma?u (crater) and the hazards will be reassessed as the eruption progresses.”
The USGS reports that Kilauea last erupted in January, with activity continuing into March. The Kilauea summit camera photographs showed a glow on Wednesday at 4:44 a.m. (14:44 GMT), which the organization’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) identified as a new eruption.
