The DOJ is waging a relentless campaign against the Mexican Cartel. In a broad fentanyl trafficking investigation, the Justice Department on Friday charged 28 members of Mexico’s famed Sinaloa cartel, including the sons of infamous drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Joaqun Guzmán Loera, alias “El Chapo,” the now-incarcerated former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, is said to have had numerous children, but only a few of them, collectively known as the Chapitos, are at the center of an ongoing internal conflict for control of the organization’s operations against the final surviving member of who is known as “old guard,” Ismael Zambada García, alias “El Mayo.”

In March of 2023, Ovidio Guzmán, a suspected Sinaloa Cartel commander who was detained in January, asserted that he is not the child of drug kingpin Joaqun “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera. At a court hearing where he was formally informed of the United States request for his extradition, the suspected boss of the cartel’s “Los Chapitos” section made the startling assertion. Ovidio was initially detained in Culiacán in 2019 but freed shortly after because of the Sinaloa Cartel’s retaliation and concerns that an uprising may break out.

Guzmán faces a total of eleven drug trafficking, gun possession, and money laundering allegations in the United States; if found guilty, he could receive a life sentence in jail.

Guzman claimed that his detention was the result of mistaken identity when he appeared at the hearing via video link from the Altiplano maximum security prison in the state of México.

The younger Guzmán’s extradition is currently being sought by the US authorities.

The Chapitos grew stronger in 2021 and 2022, eventually ranking among the top manufacturers and exporters of fentanyl and methamphetamine to the United States. In Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Sonora, and Baja California, they increased their territorial dominance. They also increased their financial gain by participating in front businesses including fishing, migrant smuggling, mining operations, and other activities.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland and Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco hosted a luncheon with U.S. and Mexican government officials April 13th, 2023, that was centered on our cooperation in the fight against fentanyl and the trafficking of firearms.

This came after a bilateral meeting between the United States and Mexico at the White House. Rosa Icela Rodriguez, who was recently named as the head of a presidential commission to fight the illegal trafficking of synthetic narcotics, weapons, and ammunition, served as the leader of the delegation from Mexico. Rodriguez is the secretary for security and citizen protection.

Officials talked about the fight against fentanyl trafficking and the illegal importation of weapons that benefits the cartels. They also emphasized the significant advancements made on both fronts through bilateral collaboration.

Both delegations agreed to further bilateral working groups focusing on the disruption of precursor chemicals shipments and illicit firearms smuggling.
