Walmart is purchasing Vizio, a smart TV manufacturer, for $2.3 billion, impacting the streaming advertising industry.
Vizio is a prominent television manufacturer competing with Samsung in North America, although Walmart is not primarily focused on its hardware business. Instead, it has acquired Vizio’s SmartCast Operating System, which has 18 million active accounts for advertisers to target.
Walmart’s acquisition of Vizio caused Roku shares (NASDAQ: ROKU) to decline. The stock decreased by 6.6%, continuing its steady drop after the fourth-quarter earnings announcement. Roku’s shares dropped over 8% as rumors of the deal surfaced on February 13.
Investors and experts believe the company may have significant hurdles, leading to a decline in reaction to the original reports and deal announcement. Roku’s stock has decreased by 26.8% year-to-date.
Insider Intelligence reported that Walmart Connect generated $3.19 billion in revenue last year. By acquiring Vizio, the giant retailer can sell ads on additional devices.
In June 2022, Walmart entered into an exclusive arrangement with Roku. Roku viewers could purchase products fulfilled by Walmart directly on their Roku with the help of a remote. After the WSJ report was released, Roku shares fell roughly 9 percent in afternoon trading. Roku is an intelligent manufacturer of television and streaming devices. Its products are also sold at Walmart, a direct competitor of Vizio.
Neither Walmart nor Vizio commented on the deal. If Walmart acquires Vizio, it will directly compete with Roku and Amazon’s Fire TV, which dominate the affordable smart TV space.
