Prosecutors said on Tuesday that two adult defendants have been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a DJ at the Kansas City Chiefs’ celebration parade in Las Vegas on February 11 after winning the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers. Previously, two underage suspects were charged separately for the shooting incident that resulted in one death and 22 injuries.
Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker informed the press that Lyndell Mays and Dominic Miller were charged with murder. Mays engaged in a dispute with an individual at the event. He reportedly brandished a firearm following an escalation in the argument. Others, including Miller, also armed themselves.
Peters Baker stated that evidence indicated that Miller’s gun was responsible for killing and shooting the woman named Lisa Lopez-Galvan. The 43-year-old woman with two children worked as a radio DJ in the local area.
Court records state that surveillance footage depicts Miller observing the altercation between Mays and an individual standing a few feet apart. Subsequently, he brandishes a firearm, pursues an individual, and proceeds to discharge it, as per a probable cause statement from law enforcement.
The statement also says that Lisa Lopez-Galvan was in a crowd of people, and Miller shot in that direction. He was also shot amid the chaos that followed and appeared to trip over a cone while he was firing his gun. He then fled from the scene of the shooting.
In surveillance video, Mays also approaches a group and chases one of its members, pointing a gun at him and appears to be shooting. He was also shot in the chaos and told the police that he drew his weapon as someone in the group told him, “I’m going to get you.”
Both Mays and Miller are facing second-degree murder and other lesser offenses. They are being held on a bond of $1 million.
Baker also said they would “hold every shooter accountable for their actions” and were not there, but they would get there.
The Lopez-Galvan family expressed gratitude for the charges against the suspects. In a statement, they said that although the arrests would not bring Lisa back, “the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office and the KCPD made it a top priority to seek justice for Lisa, the other shooting victims, those who had to witness this tragedy and the Kansas City Community.”
