Following the revocation of its license to use the legendary brand’s name in print and digital media, Sports Illustrator’s publisher has informed staff that it intends to lay off a significant chunk, if not all, of the outlet’s workforce.

Sports Illustrated and affiliated properties are owned by the Arena Group, which emailed staff on Friday morning that Authentic Brands Group had canceled its marketing license.

The union posted on X, “This is another difficult day in what has been a difficult four years for Sports Illustrated under Arena Group (previously The Maven) stewardship. We are calling on ABG to ensure the continued publication of SI and allow it to serve our audience in the way it has for nearly 70 years.”

The Sports Illustrated union will keep fighting for the publication, according to a statement from NFL editor and unit chair Mitch Goldich.

“As a union, we have battled to uphold the standards of this legendary journal, which we adore, and to ensure that our employees receive just compensation for their contributions to this business. We will not give up on this fight,” he declared.

Meredith Publishing purchased Sports Illustrated in 2018 to acquire Time Inc., which launched the magazine in 1954.
