Early Sunday morning, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) announced that its army had thwarted a coup attempt. Among those arrested were three Americans, one Briton, and numerous Congolese, although their current whereabouts remain unknown. Opposition leader Christian Malanga, who had been living in self-exile, was killed during a raid at the presidential palace after resisting arrest. His son, Marcel Malanga, was also detained.
Brigadier General Sylvain Ekenge, spokesperson for the Congolese army, informed the media that Christian Malanga had been killed and that his son, along with three Americans and a naturalized British citizen, had been detained. In total, 50 suspects were arrested.
Appearing later on state-run RTNC TV, Ekenge stated that the coup had been “nipped in the bud by Congolese defense and security forces” and assured that “the situation is under control.”
In the early hours of Sunday, a group of armed men attacked the home of Vital Kamerhe, a senior politician and close ally of President Felix Tshisekedi, who was considered a potential candidate for the nation’s next speaker. Kamerhe was reported safe following the attack.
The assailants also occupied the Palais de la Nation, the office of the president located in the city center of Kinshasa, which the Republican Guard protects.
US Ambassador to DR Congo Lucy Tamlyn expressed her shock at the involvement of American citizens in the attempted coup. She stated on social media that the US government would “cooperate fully with DR Congo authorities” and “hold accountable any US citizen involved.”
African Union Chairman Moussa Faki also condemned “any use of force to change the constitutional order in any African state.”
President Felix Tshisekedi, re-elected for a second term in December 2023 with 78 percent of the vote, has yet to comment on the failed coup. Despite his significant victory, the election results were disputed.
