On Monday, a routine mail delivery in Dublin, California, became a criminal encounter in broad daylight. Surveillance footage captured the harrowing moment when two masked assailants armed with a gun attacked a female postal carrier, robbing her of more than just mail.
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. The footage shows the unsuspecting postal worker, who has 33 years of service, diligently performing her duties when the perpetrators struck. They snatched mail from her grasp and brandished a gun at her head, demanding her phone and the keys to the mail van. Terrified, she complied. What they stole from the mail van before fleeing is still unknown.
The 63-year-old victim was emotionally shaken but physically unharmed. She sought refuge at a neighbor’s house and called 911. Although she escaped physical injury, the trauma lingers, casting a shadow over her sense of security and leaving her with restless nights haunted by the memory of the attack.
This horrific incident is a disturbing trend affecting the U.S. Postal Service. Postal carriers, known for their dedication despite adversity, are increasingly targeted by criminals exploiting their vulnerability. According to federal data, at least six mail carriers in the Bay Area have been robbed since April.
The motives behind such attacks range from stealing checks and prescriptions to obtaining USPS “arrow keys,” a relic of outdated security measures with significant modern-day implications.
Despite proactive efforts by the USPS, such as Project Safe Delivery, to protect postal employees, violence is escalating. According to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, mail robbery has surged over the past decade, with incidents rising by 30% in the past year alone. To raise awareness of this growing problem, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has begun organizing protests nationwide.
