Cockroaches in Ground Coffee May Be Why You Get Sick from Allergies and Other Immune Diseases

The presence of cockroaches in ground coffee might be a factor contributing to illness, including allergies and other immune-related diseases.

According to research conducted by the FDA, roaches and other insects can infest up to 10% of green coffee beans, and occasionally even more. They merely get roasted and crushed along with the beans since they can’t process them out entirely. It is common knowledge that the FDA permits a specific quantity of insect parts in food as long as the proportion doesn’t go above a specified threshold.

And if you are making ground coffee, there is not much you can do about it.

According to one company, Terro, a person may ingest up to 140,000 bits of insect matter annually. The FDA allows varying amounts of insects or insect fragments depending on the diet. Whole foods, including fruits and vegetables, typically have a lower permitted limit than processed goods, like flours, sauces, and spices. Because of the nature of production, whole foods typically contain more entire insects than processed foods, which typically yield more insect fragments. For instance, the amount of insects permitted in 100 grams (about half a cup) of canned or frozen berries is limited to two, yet hops, which are mostly used to make beer, can have up to 25,000 insects in the same measurement.

The information below is what the FDA has reported in the Food Levels Handbook.
