Police apprehended Jose Antonio Ibarra on Friday, who they believe is the perpetrator of the murder of a nursing student at the University of Georgia’s Athens campus. The 26-year-old male was reported to be unfamiliar with the victim. He behaved alone. They also saw that there was no additional threat.

The police recognized Jose Antonio Ibarra as the individual accountable for the killing of Laken Hope Riley. The 22-year-old nursing student was discovered near the running paths adjacent to the campus’s intramural grounds.

Authorities collected evidence from campus security video footage and other technological sources. This directed them to Ibarra. He resided in one of the apartments located south of the running paths, near the spot where Riley’s body was discovered.

Police Chief Jeff Clark provided information regarding the evidence and apprehension of the suspect. He stated that the authorities considered it an isolated and opportunistic crime.

Clark also said that Ibarra did not have an extensive criminal history. He stated that he did not know Ibarra’s immigration status but confirmed that he was not a U.S. citizen.

Clark said that Ibarra was facing multiple charges that included
malice murder
felony murder
aggravated battery
aggravated assault
false imprisonment
hindering a 911 call and
concealing the death of another.

Authorities took Ibarra to the Athens-Clarke County Jail. He appeared before a judge on Saturday.

Earlier on Thursday, Riley had left for a run. Her body was found on Thursday afternoon after a friend informed the police that she had not returned from her morning run. Police officers began searching for her. Her body was found in a forested area near Lake Herrick.

Emergency medical responders found her unconscious. They were unable to resuscitate her. She reportedly died of blunt force trauma, and investigations are ongoing. However, the police confirmed that it was a homicide.
