42 attorneys general from both political parties are suing Meta on the grounds that certain services on Facebook and Instagram are addicting and catered to children and teenagers.
The federal lawsuit also charges Meta with breaking the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by gathering personal information from users under the age of 13 without getting permission from their parents.
The lawsuits show the broad, partisan support for shielding children and teenagers from harm online. According to the attorneys general, Meta created its Facebook and Instagram products to keep teenage users on them for longer and to return frequently.
According to a news statement from the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James, attorneys general from 33 states filed a federal lawsuit against Meta in the Northern District of California, and nine more attorneys general are suing in their own states.
