Senator Robert Menendez faces fresh charges under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, along with his wife Nadine Menendez and a third defendant named Wael Hana. In September the New Jersey Democrat had been charged for reportedly offering political favors and taking bribes. Gold bars and huge amounts of dollars were found at his home, earning him the moniker Gold Bar Senator.
On Thursday, Manhattan federal prosecutors filed these new charges under the World War II era Foreign Agents Registration Act. They run from 2018 through 2022 and claim that three of them conspired to have Bob Menendez act as an agent of the North African country of Egypt.
The indictment alleges that Senator Robert Menendez, his wife and others “willfully and knowingly combined, conspired, confederated and agreed together and with each other” for the senator to act as an agent for the government of Egypt.
The indictment also alleges that the senator from New Jersey “provided sensitive U.S. government information and took other steps that secretly aided” the government in Egypt.”
The indictment also reportedly implies that the senator is aware of the act which is also called FARA as he had asked the Department of Justice to open an investigation into whether a former member of Congress David M. Rivera of Florida had registered as a foreign agent under FARA as he had done work for the Venezuela government under Nicolas Maduro.
In a May 2020 letter to the Justice Department Bob Menendez wrote, “The last thing we should tolerate is a former member of Congress potentially violating U.S. laws as he does the regime’s dirty work in the U.S.”
Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey is a sitting member of the Senate. Apart from the new charge, he might be the first sitting senator to be charged in two bribery counts.
When he was indicted in New Jersey in 2015 for allegedly trading favors for a wealthy eye doctor in return for gifts that amounted to almost one million dollars, he faced a trial in 2017. The verdict was a hung jury.
Senator Robert Menendez has refused to resign from the Senate, although he has stepped down from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, of which he was the chairman. More than 30 Democrats of the Senate including New Jersey Senator Cory Booker have asked him to resign. His lawyers have not responded when asked for comment.
