Derrick John Thompson, the son of John Thompson, was arrested on Monday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the lives of five people. John Thompson is a former state representative in Minnesota and prominent Black Lives Matter activist. His son was taken into custody and charged with two counts of murder. This comes three years after Derrick was convicted for another tragic hit-and-run incident.
Derrick’s father was expelled from the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party caucus in September 2021. His expulsion came after he was accused of falsely accusing a police officer of racial profiling and faced public scrutiny over past legal issues, including allegations of domestic assault.
During the George Floyd protests in 2020, John Thompson gained attention when he and Black Lives Matter protesters gathered outside the residence of police union leader Bob Kroll in Hugo, Minnesota. While Thompson won the state legislature election in November 2020 with endorsements from prominent figures such as Rep. Ilhan Omar, Governor Tim Walz, and Attorney General Keith Ellison, he was later unseated in the November 2022 election.
27-year-old Derrick’s hit-and-run incident occurred last week when a speeding vehicle ran a red light and collided with another car carrying five young Somali women. All five victims, reported to be members of the Dar Al Farooq Islamic Center, tragically lost their lives. Derrick Thompson was injured in the crash and underwent treatment over the weekend.
Surveillance footage of the incident went viral, revealing the horrifying moment when Derrick Thompson’s SUV crashed into the victims’ car. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated that an investigation is underway regarding the unauthorized release of the video.
Derrick Thompson has a criminal history involving driving and drug-related offenses. He has faced numerous arrests and at least six convictions. These include carrying a firearm without a permit in 2014, for which he received a one-year prison sentence and two years of probation. In 2015, he was convicted of a drug-related felony, resulting in over a month of imprisonment and five years of probation. In 2018, he was involved in a hit-and-run in California that caused life-changing injuries to a woman, who spent weeks in a coma as a result. He was sentenced to eight years in prison in February 2020 for that incident.
Derrick’s release date from the California jail system, and the reason he was free when the latest crash in Minneapolis, are yet unknown. His parole information is not publicly available.
