A US postal worker, Octavia Redmond, was fatally shot in Chicago on Friday, with the shooter still at large as of Monday morning. The National Association of Letter Carriers organized a rally on Monday to honor their fallen colleague and call for increased protections for postal workers. Authorities have discovered the getaway vehicle and offer a substantial reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.
The US Postal Inspection Service’s Chicago division is offering up to $250,000 for information that could result in the arrest and conviction of the shooter. The letter carriers’ union and other labor unions gathered on Monday to protest Redmond’s death and advocate for policy changes to enhance worker safety.
During the rally, the union shared alarming data about the risks letter carriers face in Chicago. Since August 22, more than 140 postal workers have been attacked while on duty, facing incidents of robbery, assault, and other forms of violence. Several workers shared their personal experiences of these attacks at the rally.
Redmond, a 48-year-old wife and grandmother, was shot multiple times while delivering mail in the West Pullman neighborhood. The getaway vehicle, a charred Dodge Durango, was found in a field on the 8900 block of South Holland Avenue and has been towed for forensic examination.
Many have taken to social media to pay tribute to Redmond, expressing their condolences and calling for justice.
