New details about 64-year-old gambler Stephen Paddock, who on October 1, 2017, killed 58 concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest music event in Las Vegas and injured hundreds more, have been made public by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The heavily redacted documents, which also include hundreds of pages of investigation records, evidence inventories, and interviews with people who knew Paddock, give a more complete picture of the shooter’s compulsive gambling habits. Nearly all of the gunman’s gambling activities were detailed, which shed fresh light on the gunman’s pre-attack thoughts.
However, the documents do not address the enduring query of why Stephen Paddock carried out the deadliest mass shooting in contemporary American history, according to reports. Paddock killed himself before being discovered.
In the ten years previous to the shooting, Paddock reportedly wagered hundreds of thousands of dollars at MGM Resorts properties and other Las Vegas casinos. He was known for playing computer poker for many hours at a time. According to a yearlong investigation by a panel assembled by the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, there was “no clear single motivating factor” for why Paddock opened fire on a country music festival from his 32nd-floor suite at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. No proof that he was motivated by resentment toward “any specific casino, hotel, or institution in Las Vegas,” the panel claimed in its 2019 report.
Despite the FBI’s 2019 claim that Paddock’s actions were not prompted by a grievance against any particular casino or hotel, a fellow gambler who was questioned by investigators after the attack claimed that Paddock had grown enraged about how casinos generally treated VIP players. The papers state that the unnamed gambler told the FBI that Paddock was “upset at the way casinos were treating him and other high rollers,” and that he believed the annoyance may have caused the shooter to “snap.”
The documents, according to Russell Palarea, CEO of Operational Psychology Services, aid in understanding Paddock but do not reveal his precise reason. He asserted that Paddock’s request for a hotel room with a view of the Lollapalooza outdoor music event in Chicago that summer was proof that his rage was not limited to casinos or Las Vegas.
