President Joe Biden returned to the US after a significant visit to France, where he participated in commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy. During the final day of his trip, he made a solemn visit to an American cemetery, the resting place of thousands of American soldiers, located approximately an hour from Paris.
In his remarks, President Biden reaffirmed the nation’s steadfast commitment to its allies, emphasizing this during D-Day commemorations and other events. The central purpose of his visit was to honor the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied forces from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom launched a major amphibious assault on Nazi forces along the Normandy coast, a pivotal moment leading to the end of World War II.
President Biden also paid tribute to over 2,200 U.S. soldiers who perished during World War I. On Saturday, he visited the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, about 85 kilometers east of Paris. At the cemetery, which features thousands of white headstones marking the graves of American soldiers from the First World War, Biden laid a wreath at the chapel.
During his visit, President Biden highlighted the enduring bond between the US and France in a meeting hosted by President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace. Biden remarked, “This week, we have again shown the world the power of allies and what we can achieve when we stand together. That’s what the relationship between France and the United States exemplifies.” He also noted that France has been America’s “first friend” and remains one of its closest allies. Throughout his first term, President Biden has sought to strengthen ties with Europe, which had weakened in previous years.
