An Idaho couple, notorious for the so-called Doomsday Killings, have received their sentences. On Saturday, Chad Daybell was sentenced to death after being convicted of murdering his first wife and two young children of his second wife, Lori Vallow Daybell. Lori had already been sentenced to three consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole earlier in July.
On Thursday, Chad Daybell was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the deaths of his first wife, Tammy Daybell, and his second wife’s children, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan. Additionally, he was convicted on two counts of insurance fraud.
The verdict followed a month-long trial in Boise, Idaho, where prosecutors portrayed Daybell as a man consumed by apocalyptic beliefs, labeling certain individuals as “zombies” or “dark spirits.”
The investigation intensified when human remains were discovered on Daybell’s property in Fremont County during the search for Lori Vallow’s missing children. Authorities believe Daybell concealed the children’s bodies between September 2019 and June 2020.
The case against Chad Daybell grew when officials reexamined the death of his first wife, Tammy Daybell, who had been considered to have died of natural causes in 2019. Just weeks after Tammy’s death, Daybell married Lori Vallow.
Following the recovery of the children’s remains, Tammy’s body was exhumed, and an autopsy revealed she had been asphyxiated.
Earlier in 2023, Lori Vallow Daybell was convicted of murdering her children, JJ and Tylee, and of conspiracy to murder Tammy Daybell.
Both Chad and Lori were influenced by Doomsday prophecies, which played a central role in their criminal actions.
