Today, the California Department of Motor Vehicles issued the following statement regarding the immediate suspension of GM Cruise LLC’s deployment and driverless testing permits.
Based upon the performance of the vehicles, the Department determines the manufacturer’s vehicles are not safe for the public’s operation. The suspension pertains exclusively to vehicles lacking a “safety driver,” signifying the absence of an individual in the driver’s seat prepared to assume control when necessary.
The utmost priority of the California DMV remains public safety. The department’s regulations for autonomous vehicles serve as a crucial framework to ensure the safe testing and deployment of this technology on California’s public roads. Whenever there is a perceived unreasonable risk to public safety, the DMV holds the authority to promptly suspend or revoke permits. The duration of such suspensions is not pre-established.
Today, the California DMV officially informed Cruise of the suspension of its autonomous vehicle deployment and driverless testing permits, effective immediately. The DMV has outlined the necessary steps for Cruise to seek reinstatement of these suspended permits, a process that will only culminate upon the department’s satisfaction with the company’s fulfillment of the specified requirements. This decision does not affect Cruise’s existing permit for testing with a safe driver.
